The real Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution

The 2001 season marked a monumental shift for Mitsubishi in the World Rally Championship with the introduction of the Lancer Evolution WRC. For years, Mitsubishi had dominated the sport using Group A regulations, where their rally cars remained remarkably close to the production models sold to the public. However, to stay competitive against rivals exploiting more lenient rules, Mitsubishi finally transitioned to the official World Rally Car (WRC) regulations late in 2001. This meant breaking away from strict production-car limitations, allowing engineers to radically re-engineer the suspension geometry, widen the track for better stability, and optimize aerodynamic components to handle the brutal demands of world-class rallying.

Under the hood, the Lancer Evolution WRC retained the legendary 2.0-liter, turbocharged 4G63 inline-four engine, a powerplant synonymous with Mitsubishi’s racing pedigree. Heavily modified for competition, it featured a lightweight aluminum cylinder head, an advanced anti-lag system to keep the turbo spooled, and a mandatory 34mm air restrictor that capped power at around 300 horsepower while unleashing massive torque. This raw power was managed by a sophisticated, electronically controlled four-wheel-drive system and a longitudinal six-speed sequential transmission. This setup allowed the car to claw for traction across everything from the smooth asphalt of Sanremo to the loose, unforgiving gravel of Great Britain.

Despite its advanced engineering, the 2001 campaign proved to be a challenging transition period for the team. Driven by four-time world champion Tommi Mäkinen, the car debuted at the Sanremo Rally but faced immediate teething issues, as the radical design departures required entirely new driving dynamics and setups compared to the older Group A models. While it didn't achieve the instant championship dominance of its predecessors, the 2001 Evo WRC remains a fierce fan favorite and a historic milestone. It represented the ultimate, no-compromise evolution of Mitsubishi's rally engineering during one of the most competitive and golden eras of motorsport history.
