The real Ford GT MKII

The 1966 Ford GT40 Mk II stands as one of the most iconic race cars in automotive history, born out of an intense corporate rivalry between Henry Ford II and Enzo Ferrari. After a high-profile attempt by Ford to purchase Ferrari fell through in 1963, Ford vowed to defeat the Italian automaker at the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans. Early iterations of the GT40 struggled with high-speed instability and mechanical reliability, prompting Ford to make sweeping modifications. The pivotal breakthrough came with the Mk II, which replaced the original 4.7-liter engine with a massive, naturally aspirated 7.0-liter (427 cubic inch) FE V8 derived from Ford's NASCAR program. This ferocious powertrain transformed the machine into an unyielding endurance racing force.

Refining the Mk II required extraordinary engineering vision, spearheaded by legendary designer Carroll Shelby and test driver Ken Miles. Shelby American re-engineered the chassis to handle the immense torque of the 427 V8, while Miles spent countless hours fine-tuning the car's aerodynamics and mechanical balance. One of the team's most vital innovations was a revolutionary quick-change brake system, allowing pit crews to swap out worn brake rotors and pads in minutes during grueling multi-hour runs. Capable of exceeding 200 mph on the infamous Mulsanne Straight, the Mk II combined sheer brute power with tailored endurance reliability, successfully eliminating the heat and stability issues that had plagued its predecessors.

The climax of Ford’s ambitious racing program arrived at the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans, where eight Mk II entries took to the circuit against Ferrari’s formidable lineup. In a historic display of dominance, the Ford GT40 Mk II achieved a famous 1-2-3 sweep across the finish line, led by Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon, with Ken Miles and Denny Hulme placing second. This monumental victory shattered Ferrari's six-year winning streak at Le Mans and marked the first time an American manufacturer captured overall victory at the legendary race. The 1966 Mk II not only secured Ford’s place in motorsport lore, but it also established a landmark standard for American performance engineering.
